In the world of therapy, I would be known as an ‘Integrative solution focused Therapist’ which although is a long-winded title, it’s about helping clients find their solutions and focus on the future means that I will work with many models, techniques and interventions during each therapy session to suit the client’s particular presenting issue.

Counselling is the treatment of emotional problems and undesirable feelings and is considered “talking therapy”. The aim is to facilitate change and assist people in finding meaningful alternatives to their present unsatisfactory ways of thinking, feeling or behaving. Therapy also tends to help clients become more accepting both of themselves and others, and can be most useful in promoting personal development and unlocking inner potential.

There are many different models of therapeutic intervention that can be effective in treating personal issues. Talking, support and reflecting is what usually happens in psychotherapy and counselling sessions and whilst these are very important aspects of therapy, as some people do need the safe space to explore their true feelings, as a solution focused therapist I endeavour to give my clients the right tools to allow them to make positive changes in their life.

Neuro Linguistic Programming therapy, or commonly referred to as NLP, understands how you think, feel and behave. A key element of NLP is that we form our unique internal mental maps of the world as a product of the way we filter and perceive information absorbed through our five senses from the world around us.

Neuro (Brain) Each individual has established their own unique mental filtering system for processing the millions of bits of data being absorbed through the senses. Our first mental map of the world is made up of internal images, sounds, tactile awareness, internal sensations, tastes and smells that form as result of the neurological filtering process.

Linguistic: Language we tend to believe this is the stuff we say out loud and yet our inner voice or inner advisor speak a lot of our language, we also give personal meaning to the information being received from the world outside. We form our second mental map by assigning language to the internal images, sounds and feelings, tastes and smells, thus forming everyday conscious awareness.

Programming: this has been happening since the day we were born and we sometime run old or negative programmes.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, commonly termed CBT, is a form of therapy that is focused on the here and now, and the most commonly used (not always correctly by the NHS).

It looks in detail at the pattern of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and then teaches you ways of overcoming any problems. The aim of CBT is to break any negative cycles by teaching people to recognise their unhelpful beliefs and to change them to more balanced and realistic ones (not just positive thinking) and to modify any unhelpful behaviours that are helping to keep the cycle going.

CBT is an active and co-operative therapy. The therapist works together with the client to overcome their problems through experiment and discovery. This means that the client has homework to complete away from the session to continue this process. This is an essential part of the process.
